So put the burden on everyone at their end, rather than fixing the problem
at its source.  And to heck with anyone who reads using the web, because it
doesn't have filters like that.  And by letting everyone set up filters,
make the group less attractive to outsiders (since everyone inside the group
is ignoring the problem).  That's what you're saying.  I don't understand.

Sometimes this is the only solution.  A while back you yourself forced me to
make a fix at my end for something I still believe should be fixed at the
source.  OK, I accepted that and I still read the newsgroups and occasionally
make a lame post.

I'm referring to the pause set search that I and many others believe should be
available directly on every page.  My personal fix (suggested by someone here)
was to make a local html page with the search box so it loads much faster than
the one with the useless matches from the news articles.  Then I added this
page to the Netscape toolbar.  I had to do this both at home and at work.
And it's still not as good as a pause search box on every page.  But hey,
I'm flexible.

Anyways, in defense of JW, he helped me out once with a quick response via
email to a particularly stupid question I had about some pieces.  So from
my perspective he's a valuable contributor (for whatever that's worth).
Just my 2 cents.

(...) Actually, he did provide a workaround on the server end. (URL) use it all the time. In fact, that is the link *I* use to access Lugnet via the web. (25 years ago, 13-Aug-99, to lugnet.cad.dev, lugnet.admin.general)
