Tim,
Steve is speaking from a very wise standpoint (on many levels). You can
never go wrong by offering to host things that people voluntarily contribute.
But if people start to get the feeling that there is pressure to contribute
or to let go of something, then that creates an environment where enthusiasm
can end up backfiring.
The most wonderful thing about the web is that resources can be widely
separated physically -- or close together -- yet still only a click away
in either case. And linking to something off-site is infinitely less time
consuming than incorporating and maintaining it locally.
As to whether Zach's parts tracker "should" have visible links to ldraw.org,
well, it is probably really up to Zach to decide that, either by realizing
it himself or through private suggestions from users of the tracker. Don't
get me wrong -- I agree in principle that it would be the more helpful if it
did have such a link -- but sometimes it's more effective to sit quietly and
keep the faith that things like that will eventually appear somehow, somtime,
when the time is right. Or maybe they don't. And that's OK.
I don't mean that to sound discouraging. What you're doing on the broad
level is fantastic, and years down the road, people will still be visiting
and enjoying the site. The most effective way to lead a large effort like
this, however, is to lead by example, sometimes humbly, and to ask for very
little while producing very much. Then (and sometimes only then) when the
fruits of your labor become apparent, your enthusiasm becomes contagious.
