Whoops, you're right. But, in the case of the 1x2 plates and bricks, the
centerpoint is on level with the top of a plane, and on the rectangular
lattice formed by the studs. As for the 2x5 and 2x9 hinge plates, these are
a real exception. They've always been especially hard to work with, IMO. I
probably forgot about them due to post-traumatic syndrome. :-P
The hinge pieces I had in mind seem to be the majority, and included:

etc.
Bram's follow-up (1) pretty much spelled out my feelings, too. Placing a
mis-placed piece to line up with studs is much more difficult than defining
a center of rotation and rotating the puppy.
