I believe the newest L3P is totally up-to-date on primitive substitutions,
but the previous did not substitute all cones.

Excellent, then I think the gap in the bottom should be drawn.  I could be
used to mount the cannon on an antenna or other 8 ldu width rod.

Ah, cool.  I hadn't noticed that application.  Kind of wobbly, but it
works.

BTW, which cones did you use?  I meas-timated the radii as 5 and 9, so the
existing conic primitives don't fit very well.  I guess using two
overlapping 1-4con3.dat's would be best, one scaled to 1.66667, the other
at 2.25.

I meas-timated the radii as 4.5 and 9.5, so I had to use 3 1-4con3.dat's, 2 of
which overlap.  If you _really_ want the radii as 5 and 9, I could redo it.

I'm sure your meas-timates are at least as good as mine, so it's not worth
re-doing all of your work.

How did you handle the cutout not being along the radial planes of the
cone?  That was the reason I was procrastinating on implementing this
section of the part.

It's a pain.  It looks to me like the cutout is parallel to the outer edge of
the cone.   I started with the inlined 1-4con3.dat for the bottom 1/4 of the
cone.   I completely deleted the bottom-most two quads, and altered the other
two quads so that their "inner" line would be parallel to the outer edge of
the cone (looking from above).  Your interpolation spreadsheet proved most
valuable for this.  Now I just have to add a half-cone to the top of the
cutout and I'll ship the .dat to you.

That's how I would have done it.  Not much fun.

By the way, what did you do as far as the front end of the cannon?  How and
where did you use studs?

For the bottom of the front, I projected a 1-4edge with radius=8 onto the
radius=10 cylinder, then used Excel to build the rest of the quads and
optional lines for the two cylinders.  Then I rotated and mirrored for the
other 3-4.

I did *not* model the casting dimple on the inside of the barrel.

For the studs, I used stud2a, stretched out to meet the main body at the
edges.  I need to redo this part.  The stretching makes the stud intrude on
the solid space of the body. It does not protude on the inner hollows, so
the quads never show (inner quads won't show in a transparent part), but
the conditional lines will.

I projected a 4-4edge onto the main body for the edge of the studs.

I've seen (pictures) of this part in 3 different colors -- dark gray,
trans-orange, and clear.  Does anyone know of any others?

Steve
