But I just don't think there is a need to some big changes. For example
LEGO's internal taxonomy is simply horrid (AFAIK).

Hm, I don't think so. For example some set references 44237 and I don't
have any 44237... Does that mean I can 'build' that set or not?
If both Peeron and any LDraw-compatible program understand 44237
(natively or by use of aliasing), I don't see any possible problems
arising from the aliasing.

From what I heard their internal bill-of-material records look roughly
like peeron inventory. Because we have LEGO-2-peeron color table and we
are able to make lego's design id -> peeron id table (most mold/design
ids are mapped 1:1) it would be {almost} no work for them. We need just
part no, color and quantity.
That would give us the accurate inventories. (For newer sets, of course,
nobody would expect anything older than say 5 years). And also the
numbers for NNNN or xNNNN parts.

Oh, another sci-fi fan? ;-))))
Shouldn't we just ask? ;-)
