Incredible.

I've been interested in doing the Stormtrooper helmet (since I don't have
quite the budget to be forking out $3+ for Stormtroopers) so I can model
large scenes involving them.  But I'm blanking on how to tackle such a small
detailed part.  I'll probably do the Rebel helmet first, since that looks
much simpler.  And of course, if somebody beats me to either helmet, well,
then I get to do rendered dioramas much sooner.

So far, the only technique that I've thought up is to take photographs from
the 6 axis viewpoints and map the points that way using the pixel locations
(two images are needed to get all three coordinates for each point).  It
seems that you may have a better technique for doing complex detailed parts.
Would you care to share a few tips?

Also, not to nitpick or anything, but hat is the last word I think of when I
think of Darth Vader's helmet.  Especially since there are already minifig
helmets listed.  Although if I'm searching through MLCad, I'd probably just
do a find on Vader anyway.

Again, this is cool.  Maybe somebody will render the ROTJ ending with
Vader's helmet in the fire (since this is impractical to do for real).

(...) Yes, please elaborate on you technique. I'm interest in how all part authors model complex parts. This is something I've been meaning to ask for a while now but just haven't remembered. -Orion (21 years ago, 30-Mar-03, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

(...) Well, the Vader helmet has taken a very long time. Since about June of 2002. Keep in mind that there have been periods of several months of no ldraw...
