It's acceptable to me, but I can only speak for myself!

Is there some unwritten orentiation rule for parts?  Or do we
just build up from prior similiar parts?

There appears to be a lot of unwritten rules about the LDraw language
and parts library.

When it comes to orientation and origin of parts, though, it normally
pays to look at existing parts that exhibit similar details or
functions.  What is most important, IMO, is to keep the library
conform with respect to orientation and origin.

The parts in question right now are typically both used as suspension
components in vehicles.  They have other uses as well, but those are
secondary.  When the parts are used as suspension components, they are
typically hinged in the innermost connection holes, so IMO it makes
sense to put the origin there.  When a part has one major rotation
point, like these two have, we normally put the origin there to make
insertion into models easier.

When it comes to the orientation, though, you will notice that most
long things span the X-axis.  For example the Technic beams, poles and
so on.  So in my opinion, these parts should span the X-axis.  And
your parts do already!  Wether they should point left or right I
really cannot answer since we have no similar parts already to look
at.  But whatever you choose, you should make sure that they both
point the same way!
