I have started working on the same problem. I wanted a really large scene
renderd with POVRAY. My example can be seen at.
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=217204
It is a full 360 degree view that can be viewed in a panoramic viewer.
The area of the model is 24 baseplates wide by 27 baseplates long. The
baseplates are grouped int 72 zones, each of which is 3 plates by 3 plates.
Each zone is drawn separately by using L3P and POVRAY. The 72 images plus
an image for the background were hand combined in a drawing program. (Image
Composer)
There are some problems with this method. For example, the palmtree in
front has its shadow cut off. It fell outside of the 3x3 area.
I rendered each section from a viewing point for the entire scene. I
rendered the images as tga files so that the background is transparent.
Then, I take all of the images and overlay them in a drawing program that
understands transparency. It works just like a painted background for a
movie being overlayed on live action. It's fairly intensive but the result
is cool.
I'm currently writing a program that will automate the rendering and
combining process. When it's done, I'll make a post.

My machine is a 300 mhz with 32 meg of memory. Since I'm never working on
more than a 3x3 section, mlcad does not bog down to much.

I keep them in separate files so that I could reuse sections. There is only
one 3x3 section with the trees on them. I use it over and over in different
places to get the forset look. Many of the sections of the monorail track
are reused as well.

| Does anyone have any tips on doing really large models? I am trying to build a city. I have several buildings built, but when I start adding roads and the separate buildings to the scene, MLCAD bogs down. Even when I turn stud rendering off and go (...)
