My gear modifications are very close to yours, Bram.  My rear gear is almost
exactly like yours, in fact, except I only used one cylinder brick on each
side, placed at the rear portion of the 1x2 tile.  I used a similar concept
that you used on the front gear as well, except I removed the long 2x plate on
the bottom and broke it up a little to allow the ski to be more flush against
the bottom.  I then reinforced the nose from the top and inside the storage
area.  I didn't like the lightsaber migrating up into the nose where I had to
shake it out, so I closed off the ends of the storage area.  That still leaves
enough room for the saber, too.

I've found the rear storage area to be a great place to put the extra parts
left over after building the various Star Wars sets, and now I have enough
stuff for Luke to make his little Dagobah camp setup.  :-)

Here's the landing gear I added to my X-Wing.  The studs on the rear
landing gear should go in the middle of the engines, and I attached the
front landing gear on the nose right before the body gets wider.  (If
only hull bricks were only 1 brick wide--then you could make the landing
gear retract all the way into the nose.) As it is now, the landing gear
is still mostly visible when retracted.  Please LMKWYT.
