I've started on this myself. You can see my first try at:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/1864/ look under the M:tron HQ
section. The page isn't well done yet, and I haven't put up my best movie
so far, because it's quite large and I've been buzy.
Basically you use pov-ray's clock feature, and base the position of your
models, explosions, etc. on the clock variable. Then pov-ray runs repeated
raytraces at clock values from 0 to 1 (or whatever you set). These
raytraces can then be merged into a movie file. I use a freeware program by
Alan McFarlane called Animate which converts the .tga files into an animated
.gif.
I've also played around with Smacker, with varying levels of success.
At some point I need to get better acquainted with animated graphics
formats, to find the best in terms of size of files -v- quality. My
"movies" are getting quite large (>2MBs).
I'm also waiting for a faster PC, the P120 I'm working on now just can't
handle the multiple raytraces in a reasonable amount of time.
The pov-ray tutorial is definitely the place to start learning. Good luck.
