Gateway, Inc. claims an invention in which physical blocks electronically
furnish a virtual model to a computer. I don't see any mention of prior art,
which ought to include work by Modulex and MIT using instrumented Lego. In
fact, Lego is their example, though like others they are quick to point out
that using a hub-and-spokes toy (K'nex, Tinkertoy) is also fine.

Personally, I hope the USPTO sends this application to the vertical file it
belongs in, but then they didn't do that with the peanut butter and jelly
sandwich.

Parts assembly for virtual representation and content creation

ABSTRACT

A system and method for rendering a virtual model employs construction elements
capable of identifying themselves that are assembled together to form a
physical model. At least one controller, which may be disposed within a
construction element of the assembled physical model, obtains the identities of
at least a portion of the assembled construction elements and detects
connections between these identified elements. The controller then communicates
the identities of the construction elements and their associated connections
with each other to an information handling system suitable for executing a
program of instructions for rendering the virtual model corresponding to the
assembled physical model.

If I am reading this correct, they are trying to steal Ldraw right from under our noses. I am most definitely very worried about this. Please take note that the LCD (Ldraw connection database) is probably a better example of prior art than Ldraw by (...) (21 years ago, 8-Jan-03, to lugnet.cad)
