All:
Recently, I've run across a 3D modeler written in Java
called Art of Illusion. A URL can be found here:
http://www.artofillusion.org/
It runs on all three major platforms -- Windows, Unix,
and *Mac*. (It does not use the Java3D library explicitly
because Java3D has not been licensed to the Mac platform
yet.) It is totally open source under a GPL (Gnu Public
License.) In addition, it is architected to allow people
to write their own code to import a new file format.
I have sort of lost track where the Mac folks are in
getting LDraw tools. However, if somebody is so inclined,
it looks like it would be fairly easy to LDraw capabilities
to AoI (Art of Illusion.) This would involve writing some
code that reads .DAT and .LDR files and converts
them into AoI's internal format called TriangleMesh.
For someone comfortable with Java, it might just be a
fun weekend hack.
Just a thought,
-Wayne
