If LEGO released a package that would address the needs of AFOL
modelers, I would be the first to buy it. I enjoy the stuff I do with
LDAO and writing new parts-files, but I'd still rather be building,
either virtually or physically.
Unfortunately, "addressing the needs of AFOL modelers" includes at least
the following items:
- There is no way TLG would take the effort to release all 2000+ parts
in the software. There are many old parts, no longer made, which are
probably *not* modeled in the current computer system. The parts-file
format must be documented and reproducible, so we can add parts that
aren't in the TLG software.
- There is no way TLG could include *all* of the functions that people
would want for creating models. I'm thinking of utility programs to
generate parts of the model, like curved walls made by slightly rotating
regular bricks. So the model-file format used by the TLG software would
have to be documented and easily reproducible.
Besides, TLG sees itself as marketing products for children. While
there are some whiz-bang kids out there, who could a full-featured
modelling program, most couldn't (and probably wouldn't be interested in
one). No child-focused commercial product will make most AFOL modellers
happy.
