I am trying to model the 8860 Auto Chassis Expert Builder set (in
POV-Ray) and am baffled by how to get its steering system right. Check out
the front of the car in these pictures from the building instructions to see
the section I'm referring to:

I have had success in the past with modeling a steering system which had
a set of two 2x2 turntable pieces on each side of the car, one to rotate the
wheel axle and the other to straighten out the gear rack part. Then I would
just use the rotation angle of the steering wheel to calculate the movement
of the 1x4 gear rack pieces and then from that use some simple trigonometry
to get the angle that the wheel axle part should rotate.
But 8860 uses three turntables on each side and figuring out the rotation
angle of each is beyond me. Does anyone know how to calculate these? (given
the steering wheel angle, or even the displacement of the gear rack section)
My head hurts.

| (...) (URL) is the rack turntable) If you know the displacement of the steering rack, it shouldn't be too difficult to calculate length c. However, I haven't thought a whole lot about how the interior angles of the triangle relate to the rotation of (...) (24 years ago, 14-Dec-00, to lugnet.cad)
