Follow-up:

What I'm trying to do is generate "ldraw" rendered images directly
to a file.  This is an attempt to speed up the rendering process
in the Virtual Explorer.  The quality will be less, but hopefully it
will be more interactive.

I still haven't been able to make ldglite dump the output to a png file.

You can use LeoCAD to do that, just type:

leocad file.dat -i image.png -w [width] -h [height]

The server is running FreeBSD 3.2. Can you make a binary for that platform?
How about Solaris 2.6/7 ?

Ooooh Solaris.  Could you compile ldglite for Solaris and let me know what
opengl extensions it lists?  I think this is one of the platforms that
supports the HP_OCCLUSION_TEST extension that I've been dying to try out.

Sorry about butting in on the leocad thread.  I just saw Solaris and jumped.
