GIF is probably better to compress an image with few colours and strong
contrasts. JPEG does a Fourier transform of each 8x8 pixel box (as I
have understood), and is generally only well suited for images which are
fairly smooth.
I my opinion, GIF is probably best for compression of LDraw images, as
LDraw has a very limited palette.
If you use shading in LDLITE, you get more colours, but GIF is still
better to compress the images. JPEG compression will give you "ringing"
around the edges due to the Fourier transform. (Try for yourself with
an image with few colours and high contrast, say a black box on white
background. If you compress it with JPEG and not too high quality, you
will see the "ringing" effects around the edge.)
If your images are produced with POV-Ray, on the other hand, be sure not
to use GIF to compress them. They usually have far too many colours and
the edges are generally smooth enough for the JPEG to perform nicely.
I'm off to Paris for a week now, and to Greece for two weeks after
that. See you all later! :-)
