They broke really easily, and they needed custom lengths (especially for the
"cable" parts) every time there was a new use.
I've got it on pretty solid authority we'll not see them again. They're not
likely to have a cheerleader within the group. (This after I stated I wished
we'd see them again).
The official terms for these parts were inner cable and outer cable, by the way.
Those made it nicely clear how they worked.
There were also two sets of cable ends. The originals (1992) were

These were replaced in 1995 with these three:
(apparently they still broke too easily, I think during disassembly)
http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/6642
http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/6643 (Peeron has an issue there with 5118)
http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/6644 (again, 5118's year is off)
I see a note on the LUGNET entry for 5118 that they bend really easily. I guess
that was an issue too.

| (...) To clarify this, the 5118 available in 1991 had the older cable links. 5118 bought in 1995 had the new version of the links (check the 1991 and 1995 service pack scans on Peeron). I should fix the LUGNET database. <sigh> -- joshuaD (15 years ago, 12-Feb-10, to lugnet.cad)
