My question is here: what does link the Flex-System hose and cable together?
Answers would be appreciated.

Yes, the flex system is a form of push-pull or
Bowden cable. It was introduced in
1991 and was used on a number of sets
throughout the 1990s. The cable came in various lengths and there were ends
that could be clipped on to attach to either an axle or a ball. The hose is a

the hose was also used as decoration to make curved shapes without a cable
inside. You can read more about the system on
Technicopedia.
