Currently, people can only model virtual models of real bricks that are

cross-section it and then do the extra step of making the hollow shell

If someone really wants to go to the trouble of making a cross-section, and
knows how to do so, adding in the missing surfaces shouldn't be that big a deal,
yes?

I therefore propose the question:  Should LDRAW model files have an internal
"solid" extension that will be representing their inner texture?

I'd say no.  People are clearly already concerned with keeping file size as low
as possible, what with all the primitives and quads and stuff.  Using MS-Paint
logic, any system that's designed to recognize "interior" vs "exterior" space
isn't going to work if you lop off half a brick and don't fill in the open
surfaces anyways (and not having to was the whole point of this proposal).  Any
other solution is going to require coding solid geometrical shapes instead of 2D
surfaces.  That's a lot of processing power for something that you won't see
except for the odd chance that someone decides to do a cut-away view of a brick.
Moreover, that's a lot more work to go back and recode the entire library of
parts to be solid-core parts.  For that matter, this is all more or less
CAD-based, yes?  Is it even possible to code a solid-core part?
