There are several different types of silver color that seem to get used
interchangably, and not enough listed colors to cover them all individually.
Here are the ones I know about:
Chrome silver - Parts that are actually coated with a thin layer of aluminum,
and have a polished mirror-like surface. Should be very difficult to mix up
with anything else, as you can actually see your reflection in their surface.
Pearl silver - Used primarily in the TECHNIC/BIONICLE lines, this is a silver
pigment suspended in a semi-translucent plastic. Flow lines are very clearly
visible as dark swirls that reflect the light differently, and there should be a
very faint sparkle visible in them.
Painted silver - These are the parts that look like they've been painted, but
not chromed. Specifically, this has been used only recently on parts like the
3x3 radar dish, the 1x1 round plate, the 1x2 grille tile, and the IG-88 minifig.
The gold version of this has been used on minifig visors (Mars Mission and
Agents), plus Gold-Tooth's hair. It has a very uniform (but unpolished) look,
with no visible flow lines, and if scratched it is very clear that the plastic
is a different color underneath. Lightsaber hilts that are neither true chrome
or light-bley are probably this color, as I (oddly) can't recall seeing one that
was actually formed with a silver-pigmented plastic.
Silvertone - This _might_ be the same as Pearl silver, but I don't think it uses
the same mix of plastic and pigment. It's less metallic looking than the Pearl
silver, but there are still visible flow lines. It _almost_ looks like
light-bley, but it's just a tiny bit darker with a faint metallic sheen. Mostly
I've seen this used on medieval arms and armor,
Antique pearl silver - This is an odd one, as it's exclusive to a single run of
parts. The second wave of BIONICLE mask packs each had one silver and one gold
Kanohi packed in them. Both of these were made in a pearlized plastic, but both
have a very distinct greenish tint to them that I've never once seen used before
or since. It's not enough to make them look green, but it is enough to make it
clear that they aren't the same color as any other silver-colored LEGO parts.
(These aren't the only colors to have seen exclusive releases in the BIONICLE
line, as there are also blacklight-flourescent shades of trans-yellow and
trans-red that I've never seen used outside of one or two of the very first wave
of BIONICLE parts).
I'm not sure which of those is whatever color "metallic silver" is supposed to
be, but the earliest I ever saw the painted silver was on some of the fairings
from the TECHNIC C-3PO model, and I've never seen the silvertone parts prior to
the announcement that they were going to stop producing chrome parts. And if
you want to see a specific instance of both, check either Clawdette or Dr.
Inferno from the Agents line. Both have painted silver robotic arms with
silvertone robot claws inserted into them.
And this doesn't even get into the fact that there are several different types
of plastic (regular ABS for standard bricks, what appears to be acrylic for
transparent parts, at least four types of rubber, plus a more flexible plastic
that's used for swords that might possibly be the same plastic they use for
flexible TECHNIC tubing of both the thin/straight and thick/crinkle varieties).
Each different type of material has to be colored in a different manner, and
when you get into silver colors that can get a bit wonky. It's not as big a
deal as it sounds, since there's obviously no trans-silver, and the only silver
rubber parts I can think of offhand were Krana and Kraata from the BIONICLE line
(they used at least eight different shades of metallic or pearlized rubber
between those two groups).
Oh, yeah, and if you _REALLY_ want to get confusing, you have to throw in the
actual metal parts. Outside of several axle pieces (both train and some of the
old car wheels), there are metal rods in the land-legs that came with three of
the four dinosaur pods. There's one Krana shape that has been released in both
"white metal" (think gaming miniatures) and actual sterling silver, and there's
_one_ official copy of a single Kanohi mask that was forged in solid platinum
(they reportedly didn't even keep a copy for their archives). Additionally, for
the non-silver metals, there were Hau Kanohi and three-piece C-3PO minifigs that
were forged in solid gold.

| Which color is used for the silver parts in sets like the 8458 Silver Champion and on wheels in sets like the 8448 Super Street Sensation, 8466 4 x 4 Off-Roader and 8471 Mag Wheel Master? Is it the "painted silver" color? (14 years ago, 30-Jun-10, to lugnet.cad)
