How is this different from photographers sharing high-resolution images of their
work on Flickr, or developers contributing to open-source programs? I would
argue that with the original material available for others to compare, it is
even easier to prove (and discourage) instances of theft. If the original work
is widely publicized and properly attributed (as is the case with LDraw.org
contests), the whole community can help recognize rip-offs, to say nothing of
learning from the entries.
In any case, I am curious to see the numbers that substantiate this position.
Has this happened with LDraw.org contests in the past? What gets sold, the LDraw
file itself? An entire clone brand product line based on the model? One replica
among friends?
Personally, I think the sharing of LDraw models is an issue that bears close
inspection as LDraw.org seeks to encourage more participation in the contests
and the community in general. Do the risks of robbery really outweigh the
benefits of showcasing well built models? Perhaps, but I hope not.
Well, how about this. Among contestants who do choose to share their models, are
the LDraw files made available at ballot time? (I can't find the record of
previous contests, so I'm not sure.) Surely that can be done.
