That's very strange. It worked fine when I tested it last night before posting
the announcement message. Now it doesn't, even with the same mirror that worked
last night (easynews). I'll see if I can figure out what's wrong (I suspect
it's the fact that the release is hidden).

No, LDView creates a directory named "Unofficial" in the user's ldraw directory,
and creates a p and parts directory under that (along with p\48 and parts\s if
needed). These directories don't actually get added to LDView's search path, so
if you ever turn off the feature that allows for searching for unofficial parts,
they'll stop being used. The search feature first checks to see if the
unofficial part has already been downloaded into that directory. If it has, it
checks to see if enough time has passed such that it should check the part
tracker for updates to the part. If it can't find the file at all, or enough
time has passed to check for updates, it checks the parts tracker for the actual
file. Also warning gets generated when a part gets used via this mechanism.
