Oh yeah... :)

I couldn’t really give any advice for creating your own. There are a few mosaic-making programs. You can try them and see if you really like one in particular’s output. Seems some people like me have developed their own way to create mosaics, with everyone thinking their way is the best. :)

When working with grayscale mosaics I typically adjust the brightness so the colors are balanced between black and white, and not heavy in the lighter or darker shades. This also makes use of more colors. If I created a mosaic from a very dark picture, it may only contain black, dark gray, and gray colors. If I spread out the palette, all 5 grayscale colors are used somewhat evenly, creating a more realistic mosaic in my opinion.

I would stay away from trial-and-error. I personally rely heavily on computers for my mosaics. I want something I can stand back from and instantly recognize.

Good luck, Corey

Michael, I enjoy a challenge. :) Using that image, here's what I came up with using my grayscale shading technique: (URL) Feel free to use the image. If you'd like to make this, I can give you the mlcad file or false-color instructions to make (...) (19 years ago, 31-Jan-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic, FTX)
