Oh yeah... :)
I couldnt really give any advice for creating your own. There are a few
mosaic-making programs. You can try them and see if you really like one in
particulars output. Seems some people like me have developed their own way to
create mosaics, with everyone thinking their way is the best. :)
When working with grayscale mosaics I typically adjust the brightness so the
colors are balanced between black and white, and not heavy in the lighter or
darker shades. This also makes use of more colors. If I created a mosaic from
a very dark picture, it may only contain black, dark gray, and gray colors. If
I spread out the palette, all 5 grayscale colors are used somewhat evenly,
creating a more realistic mosaic in my opinion.
I would stay away from trial-and-error. I personally rely heavily on computers
for my mosaics. I want something I can stand back from and instantly recognize.
