If you are really set on a single backboard, I would buy 4 thin sheets of 4 X 8
plywood. Lay 2 pieces side by side to form a 8 X 8 square. Lay the other 2
pieces on top, perpendicular to the first 2, and screw them together. Cut the
joined pieces down to 6 X 8.
