Hello there! My Lego hobby began just a few months ago, in November 2003. I
visit this forum regularly, and love seeing all the cool Lego artisty here. What
follows are links to some of my own humble little mosaics, and some explanations
of them too. They're all made of bricks, not plates, and most are studs out. A
few very small ones I made are studs up.

If you just want to go ahead and browse the mosaic gallery instead of reading my
explanations of the mosaics, here's the link:

My very first mosaic, a portrait of my cat Pixie's face. It's three studs thick
because I made her spur of the moment, and I didn't have a 16 x 16 baseplate to
work on. Or any baseplate, for that matter.

Another of Pixie, 32 x 32, this time of her laying down and looking at me all
annoyed like. When I finished it I plopped her down in front of it so I could
get a pic of her and the mosaic together. She doesn't seem to be too impressed
with it.

My first (human) portrait, of my own face. It took me a good 10+ hours and then
5 days of on and off tinkering to get it to match my picture well enough. (Now
it takes me about two hours to make a 32 x 32 mosaic portrait, from working with
the photo to building with bricks.)

I'm most proud of this one, a portrait of my husband Daniel, 32 x 32. It looks a
lot like him, too. Moreso than my portrait does.

Yet another portrait, this time of my husband's coworker Jeremy for christmas
2003 (32 x 32). He didn't mind me using old yellowed lego, so I bought some old
used lego for this mosaic to save money (it turned out to be less than 1/2 the
price of new bricks). Also pictured is the printed black and white photo I used
to make this mosaic. This gives you a basic idea how I go about making them:

a. Get a pic of the person.
b. Make it black and white (if it's not already) using your favorite picture
editing/painting program (I use the GIMP www.gimp.org).
c. Scale the image to fit a piece of paper, and place a lego grid on it (in this
case, a 32 x 32 grid).
d. Print the image.
e. Get to building.

Jeremy in Lego. He was thrilled with the result. It's now proudly displayed next
to his computer.

One of my favorites, a 32 x 32 black and white Lego jolly roger from the old
pirate sets.

Some fun tiny mosaics: a little studs out ascii heart, a studs on top red heart
I made in about two minutes, and a scary studs on top skelleton face based on
the jolly roger lego mosaic.

I made these black and white Pixie faces as a simple excercise to see the
differences between the scale of studs out and studs up.

Here's the face of a queen of hearts card from a deck I have in my desk. After
the Jeremy mosaic I had some old yellowed white bricks left over, and I made
this just to pass the time (it's since been taken apart, and this is the only
fuzzy pic I have of it).

For my husband, the football fanatic, a 32 x 32 Seattle Seahawks logo, with a
"Go Hawks" cheer. I made this right after they got into the playoffs in 2003,
after we came back from the Seahawks and 49er game. Too bad they went on to lose
to Green Bay.

This is my latest mosaic, finished 04/17/2004, yet another for my husband. He's
in a Madden 2004 (PC) online football league, the BCFL, and this is his team's
logo, the Dublin Fury. It's 48 x 48, my largest mosaic yet. Unlike the Seahawks,
he's well on his way to the BCFL Superbowl this year. Dublin Fury:

This second angled Dublin Fury pic shows the raised text for the Dublin Fury
font is two studs thick:

Questions and comments happily accepted. Enjoy :-)

Nancy.
