(...) I've had good luck removing Timmy freckles and some microphones using a solvent and a toothpick. You have to be slow and patient, and it may not be as efficient as an exacto, but it works. I spoke with one of the LEGO representatives attending Brickfest and the truth is, the LEGO element designers found a way to keep it from being a choking hazard while consequently making it easier to remove helmets (...) I second that. erasers give a far better result and you loose less of the shiny finish. the ink erasers that have rubber instead of lead in a pencil are good cos you can sharpen them to keep the point (not sure if that is what you mean by (...) (...) I have always thought that it was to negate vacuum between the head and the post on the torso, making it easier to remove the head. Although, the choking thing sounds somewhat reasonable too.
