FWIW, use a pencil eraser for to remove broader printed areas such as
sideburns and larger beards. If you don't trust yourself with a regular
pencil eraser, art supply stores can have various kinds that are somewhat
smaller and pointed.

I second that. erasers give a far better result and you loose less of the shiny finish. the ink erasers that have rubber instead of lead in a pencil are good cos you can sharpen them to keep the point (not sure if that is what you mean by (...) (23 years ago, 16-Jul-01, to lugnet.build.minifigs)
