Each engine pod is attached to the fusilage by two click hinge joints. On
the pod side, there are two normal 1x2 click hinge bricks. Attached to each
one of those is a click hinge connector piece. On the side of the fusilage
is a 2x1 technic brick with two holes in the side. Each hole fits a piece
that looks like this: http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/x119 , but with a
technic pin on the end. When both pods are fully extended out, the circular
nature of the technic pins allows them to rotate to a limited degree. As
the pod is tilted forward, both of the technic pin hinges rotate with it,
seperately of each other. However, both connecting hinges cannot rotate and
stay in the same position. The forward connecting hinge clicks down one
step, and allows the pod to maintain the position. They can go almost
vertical, but not quite. In the fully extended position, both pods tend to
tilt upwards slightly, due to the weight on the back. To be honest, I
didn't really plan it that way, it just wound up functioning like that. I
had considered moving the 2x1 technic brick up by one on the fusilage, but
after trying that out I realized that there would be nothing securing it
down and the pods would fall off. The real pain in building it came from
realizing that 1x8 black plates and 3x2 yellow inverse slopes are some of
the rarest bricks ever, and coincidentally were the ones I needed most. One
would think that a yellow inverse slope would be more widespread, but
apparantly not...
