You beat me to it! ;-)

Looks great Bryce! The JSF cockpit piece is perfectly suited to the Hind IMHO,

I really like the front half of the model, although the tail seems too
chunky to me,

I like the missile tubes under the wings, very clever idea

Great job! I look forward to more.

Thanks Geordan.  My plans for a LEGO Hind started the second that I saw that
canopy piece and were cemented when I saw the Republic Gunship kit.

I still have issues with those canopies myself: they're basically useless on a
horizontal mounting, unless they're mounted with the taper forward as on the
JSF.  And as you've seen, articulating the cockpits at an angle sucks up hull
space; in mine, it's worst at the chaingun and potential forward wheel well.
(Not like I have space into which I can retract the *rear* wheels, not unless I
turn the cabin into a phone booth...)

The chunkyness in the tail is directly related to the front section design.
To get the cockpit section angled as shown and still have room for the pilot
minifigs, I needed to make the rest of the fuselage taller than it should be
(if you look at pictures of an actual hind you can see that the front canopy
is much closer to the bottom of the aircraft than is shown on my model).

It's really not that bad, though: the tail *is* fairly chunky in terms of size,
and I personally think the "height" of the forward cockpit is partially an
optical illusion generated by the chin sensor package, which I struck from mine
for pure aesthetics.

On
the up side, a standard minifig can stand up in my Hind's cabin (whether or
not passengers can do this in the genuine article is something that I wasn't
able to find out).

Just out of curiosity, what are your interior cabin dimensions?  I significantly
deviated from the original design to accomodate eight armed minifigs, extending
the cabin aft between the wings to the fuselage taper.  Mine's like 6 x 13 x 6
bricks tall, if I remember the stats correctly...

One thing I can try is to move the beginning of the rear
fuselage slope foreward a few studs.  The Hind was sort of a seat of the
pants effort than my usual models so some of the proportions may be a bit off.

The Hind's a mean machine to build, really: fixed-wing aircraft use a lot of
straight lines and simple hull forms that rotary-wing designers apparently don't
give a damn about.  If I ever get that tapering-ovoid tail shape out of bricks,
I'm going to be quite amazed.

What I really wanted to do with the tail section was to use hinge parts a la
The Spowith Camel or the UCS X-wing to get a gradual taper to the shape, but
I would have been unable to add the horizontal stabilizers.  Also, I have
had little success duplicating that technique in MLCAD.

Been thinking about the stabilizers, myself: I've got an idea about them, which
I oughta sit down and try for a change.  More word on it if it works.

Chris, you did that nice looking Spetnaz SOF Hind that was posted a while back on brickshelf right? That MOC, along with the afore-mentioned canopy parts, were my primary inspiration to try and tackle the Hind. The 5 bladed rotor mounted no your (...)
