Great job! I look forward to more.

Thanks Geordan.  My plans for a LEGO Hind started the second that I saw that
canopy piece and were cemented when I saw the Republic Gunship kit.

The chunkyness in the tail is directly related to the front section design.
To get the cockpit section angled as shown and still have room for the pilot
minifigs, I needed to make the rest of the fuselage taller than it should be
(if you look at pictures of an actual hind you can see that the front canopy
is much closer to the bottom of the aircraft than is shown on my model).  On
the up side, a standard minifig can stand up in my Hind's cabin (whether or
not passengers can do this in the genuine article is something that I wasn't
able to find out).  One thing I can try is to move the beginning of the rear
fuselage slope foreward a few studs.  The Hind was sort of a seat of the
pants effort than my usual models so some of the proportions may be a bit off.

What I really wanted to do with the tail section was to use hinge parts a la
The Spowith Camel or the UCS X-wing to get a gradual taper to the shape, but
I would have been unable to add the horizontal stabilizers.  Also, I have
had little success duplicating that technique in MLCAD.

(...) I still have issues with those canopies myself: they're basically useless on a horizontal mounting, unless they're mounted with the taper forward as on the JSF. And as you've seen, articulating the cockpits at an angle sucks up hull space; in (...) (22 years ago, 17-Jul-02, to lugnet.build.military)
