Here's the pics I've taken so far:

The person who correctly guesses the ship and year gets to keep it... er...on
second thought, maybe not!

   Dan-

Wow.  That's lovely, really lovely--as to be expected,
I suppose!  Is it fully in scale with the cruiser, and
is the cruiser still extant?  I really need better lighting
to take a good assay of it because the flash really messes
up the sense of "wholeness" one gets.

My guess, however, would be Missouri, 1952; that's because
a lot of the 20mm Oerlikons are gone, and there are no
catapults aft (meaning it's got a helipad).  Because the
most common methods of differentiating between the ships of
the class are the superstructure and the small markings on
the hull--both things not in evidence at this stage--I'm
not willing to bank on either.  Maybe the catapults and crane
just haven't been added, but that camoflauge screams "Ulithi
Atoll, 1944".  Ask me to ID it again once you've finished the
fighting tops.  Oh, and the hull numbers.  ;)

Do you plan to "teak" the decks?  One of the great defining
marks of the _Iowa_ class ships was those amazing teak decks.
I really do like the way the geometry of the turrets came out
from above--from the front, they're a little washed out in the
chromatically "busy" scheme with the flash, but from above
they're gorgeous.  And WHAT, in God's name, is that enormous
   grey thing it's resting on?!?

   all best

(...) oops! I forgot I posted those pictures... gotta stay off the internet after drinking a night of building / drinking! I took the pics at night, but promise some much better daylight pictures when I'm finished. Yes, Lindsay's guess is correct (...) (21 years ago, 16-Jan-04, to lugnet.build.military)
