Yes, it is self-supporting without the stand.  However, the center of mass is
rather far forward when it's in regular turkey mode, so it sort of leans over a
bit (the shock absorber in the leg is actually slightly weight bearing, so it
deforms some)  The stand simply keeps the turkey properly horizontal.  When the
tail drops down to let the Final Weapon out, the center of mass shifts
backwards enough that it sits almost level, but it's a bit precarious because
the weight is spread out so much over a small footprint.  It also shakes a lot
when I'm futzing with it to deploy the weapons, so the stand keeps it more
stable.  It's just safer all around to leave the support there :)
