One of the biggest problems turned out to be photographing the
Pygmy - I only have a low-res webcam at my disposal, and it can't
handle the darker parts very well. So, I ended up rebuilding the
whole mecha in MLCad, and then rendering it in POV-Ray.

Personally I like to do both so I treated myself with a good
digicam. I do love MLCAD and the POV Rendering.  I am trying to
get LGEO to work but I am not having any luck.  Have you tried?

Both images of the Pygmy were actually rendered with LGEO parts, though
not every part in the model was available in the LGEO library. It
proved to be a bit of a hassle because POV-Ray kept warning about
version errors in the .POV files generated by L3P. In the end, I
manually edited the if/then statements in the .POV files to read
"version=3.1" instead of "version="3.0". That did the trick.

I'm fairly satisfied with the end result, but raytracing on my antique
PC is too much of a trial-and-error process to be practical. I don;t
have the funds right now, but maybe I can trick my dad into buying a
digital camera...

To spruce things up a little I
added the VG01 Heavy Laser Cannon to the first picture - it's not
really a microfig-scale weapon, but it underscores the Pygmy's
small size nicely.

I like the weapon a lot.  I noticed though that you are using the
chain parts.  That usually means there is some kind of ammo
involved.  I might be missing something but that sort of
contradicts "Laser".

Ah, but there's actually a story behind that. You see, due to the
enormous power consumption of the Heavy Laser Cannon prototype, the
designers at Vanguard General decided to outfit the VG01 with a
feeder/delinker mechanism which would accept army-standard laser
batteries on a chain. (For comparison: a single laser battery will
power a human-sized military lasergun for 60 shots.) The VG01 is so
powerful it exhausts the battery in a single shot, after which the
empty battery is ejected out the side. Not very environment friendly,
but the firepower is quite devastating - in my imagination, of course.

Anyway, thank you for the kind words! I hope to have some new stuff by
the end of next week. Maybe I'll try something less humanoid...

(...) Hi Victor, welcome. Great to have a new mech-head. (...) would think that they would be out of a job if the VM01-MU proves itself. (...) In my opinion TK's joint tech is the best so far for the size, specially for arms. It works really well (...) (21 years ago, 25-Feb-03, to lugnet.build.mecha)
