This is a total gas....I can't believe you that the car and robot modes look
so much like, well, a car and a robot.  Man, Hasbro can't even do that with
free-form molds half the time!

Excellent!

Hey all,

Finally, I have something new in the way of mecha :)

For some reason, I'm on a huge Transformers kick lately. I've been seeing
all of these cool Lego renditions, but it's been so long since one of them
actually *transformed*; I figured I'd remedy the situation.

I spent a week or so designing & engineering the guy, so I knew how he'd
work ahead of time, but I can't believe how quickly he went together - from
start to finish, about three hours including digging through unsorted bins.

Obviously, his vehicle mode is a sports car of some sort, though exactly
which model is a mystery - I figure he's a Civic or something, just modded
beyond recognition :) The design originally came from the Honda Insight, I
guess, since the rear wheels are set so far inside the body.

Part Mods (since I can't *ever* build something without cutting some ABS
first): All 4 wheels needed to be held by 1 x 2 wheel holders, which don't
exist. I ended up cutting two '2 x 2 plate w/ wheel holders' in half. Also,
not so much modding as... uh... customizing... is the face. I took a plain
grey minifig head and added some Stikfas [1] decals.

PLMKWYT!!

(...) Thanks, Gil! You know, I hadn't even thought of that. It is hard to get both the robot and car modes to look good. It sounds crazy even to me, but I think Bitstream's look is due entirely to my spending too much time looking at David Willis' (...) (21 years ago, 7-Feb-03, to lugnet.build.mecha)
