A little of both actually. I think (mind you no-one's made a fusion/fission
powered battlemech yet so I don't know) that the thing should have some kind
of reactor. In DW's case, he's got two. The long cyldrical things. The
bit on the hind quarter section of the body seems to me to be some kind of
radiator. Hoses, big grill.
The rest is for effect. I just look at the space and promply try to fill it
with interesting looking machinery. All the yellow octogons seem to me they
should be some kind of sheilding or armor. Perhaps this should be the
reactor proper. I don't know, I just followed what the big mech in my
backyard looks like,.... whoops, I shouldn't have said that....
Engines are another thing I try to incorporate into my mechs. Almost all of
my creations have them. The smallest frame I managed to to it in was ORC.

Thanks, got to put that degree to use somehow. I'm thinking of expanding
the story so keep an eye out. Depending on how quick I build you should see
another mech coming soon.
