I really like the ball joints and my first mecha design.  I used 6 per mecha.
The mecha was small enough that a single ball joint was enough to hold the
body up.  but occasionly when the pose is extreme or too much off ballence
weight is applied to the model (like when I tried to make a cannon variant)
the ball joints give out and it collapses.

I Built a larger mecha and had to work on the hip design because the ball
joints were not strong enough and the mecha would fold in half.  I am still
using the ball joints in the ankles but that is all.  the hips I am using
are using technic friction pins (covered with tape to add even more friction
in the actual hips).  The hips rotate only about the axis through the pelvis
part.   the thighs rotate vertically from the hips allowing the mecha to
have a proper toes pointing out stance (similar to Mladen's Coyote
http://brickshelf.com/gallery/Mladen/Creations/Mecha/Coyote/coyote_10.jpg).
again I used a friction pin.  I also used clich hinges so that the legs can
spread out (Split like) in the actual hip construction.  The knees are
simple click hinges but what make everything work are the ball joints in the
ankles.

I like the leg design but it didn't fit the scale of the mecha torso that I
had built.   built a new torso and arms.  (and Mostly copied the head design
from my first mecha). I am still making brickbay purchases to swap in the
correct colors. once this is done I will post pics (and enter it into the
contest.)
