Build a 1x1 "headlight" into the body of the missle?  That way it can be
attached many different ways.  I use this all the time.

Another, non-LEGO solution is to use the round version of this part:

http://guide.lugnet.com/partsref/search.cgi?q=4085

which MEGABLOCKS or one of those companies makes.  You get dozens when you
buy a Battleship model.  That way your missile is still totally round.  But
I like the headlight version better.
