Like anything LEGO, it's really up to you. What scale are you going for?
Minifig, microfig, nanofig, something else?
My favorites, the origami mechs, are all about finding unique uses for
standard parts...minifig hips and legs as fingers, for example.
You might want to do what I did at first, blatently copy someone elses
design...not to pass off as your own, but to get a feel for how to put one
together...then build from that experience...for the origami mechs, I found
Jeremy Sproats designs, and those at the Japanese Zizy site to be the best
(http://www.io.com/~jsproat/index.shtml and
http://www1.linkclub.or.jp/~zizy/index.html respectively).
