Edward,

Does anyone have some advice they can offer? Should a Mech use bi-ped

Are there some sites around that provide some building instructions to
assist me?

You may find this site of interest:

http://www.geocities.com/technicpuppy/lblinks.html

The site's dedicated to RCX-driven bi-peds of all shapes and sizes. Some are
rather humanoid, which is what I suspect you want, but some are more tank-like,
which, to my mind, anyway, still qualify as "mecha".

A functioning sel-balancing bi-ped is a real challenge-- I'm currently working
on only my second one, and it's taking me months! Good luck!
