Hi, I am about to embark on building my very first Mecha and intend to
incorporate the Mindstorms RCX unit (with motors/light sensor/etc.).

Very cool.

Does anyone have some advice they can offer? Should a Mech use bi-ped
walking or wheels?

I'd think bi-pedal would be a tough thing, dealing with balance and all. 3+
legs would help, if you really want it to walk. I'm not a huge fan of
wheels, how about tank treads? That would be cool, and easy to control w/
just two motors (for forward, back, turn left, turn right).

Are there some sites around that provide some building instructions to
assist me?

Mainly do the origami type, but for high technical level stuff, you should
ask Eric Spohie.
