Inspired by the recent robo-quad opus, and particularly this comment on it, I am building a feline mecha of my own. Also inspired by the robo-quad, I will post the progress of the model in stages

Stage 1 - Head - COMPLETED!

I generally build my mecha type models from the head down. The face in particular determines the character of the model, and the size of the face is determined by the parts used. Once I’m happy with the face, it sets the scale of the rest of the model.

I was intending this to be a female robopussy, but I think the face looks a bit too masculine for that, and I’m not sure how to girly it up. At the very least I need to revisit the neck connection, so I may tackle the problem then. In the meantime, I’m pretty happy with the face.

Stage 1a - COMPLETED!

OK, I wasn’t all that happy with the head at all. It looked a bit too lionish, and the ears were a bit teddy-bearish. I also made the neck connection stronger, although you can’t see that in the pics.

Stage 2 - Frame - First Draft - COMPLETED!

With the head completed, I start on the body. Getting the proportions of the limbs looking right is the primary goal here, as well as getting the poseability right. I’m trying out the new bricky ball joints on this one, which are parts I’ve been wishing for since ball joints were first released. They will eventually need stiffening with paper, of course, but they’re a real godsend for simplifying building a ball joint.

The photos show the first draft of the frame. It’ll probably get tweaked a bit as building progresses - I think the legs may be a little short, but I want it to be able to drop to all fours, so I may have to live with it.

I’m pleased with the poseability of this frame. The waist joint is something I’ve tried before with only moderate success, but I think It adds a lot of character to the model allowing more feline type poses. The click-rotation hinge I’m currently using will probably be too weak once the frame has been filled out, but we’ll see how it goes. I haven’t come up with a simple way to stiffen those hinges yet, so I welcome any (non-destructive) suggestions.

Since these photos, I have tweaked the frame a little.

Stage 3 - Torso Detailing - In Progress - stay tuned

(...) Vool looking so far! Since there may not be enough female minifigs, maybe your MOC will now shed light on the lack of female mechs (or is that mechas? I never remember). (...) Maybe some big eyelashes? Or some red blush on the cheeks? (...) (...) (17 years ago, 12-Jul-07, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

(...) It's great to finally see cartoony stuff in mecha again. It reminds me of the stuff Felix makes. There was another guy that made something similar with action figure inspired commandos. Your moc doesn't look very feline though. It kinda looks (...) (17 years ago, 13-Jul-07, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

(...) A, I would remark that the stiffening of hinges issue could become critical, and ultimately the downfall of your endeavor. I urge you to soldier on, and seek inspiration where you find it, to stiffen that hinge. Perhaps you should seek a state (...) (17 years ago, 13-Jul-07, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
