I have been asked an interesting question regarding public frame designs, like
the GlaGla frame:
“Does it have to be an original design by me?”
My answer to this is Yes, UNLESS the design you are using has been made publicly
available for use. This could mean free or pay-for instructions. As such, a
few examples are: the GlaGla frame, Eric Sophie’s
Build-a-Bot design or
Brian Cooper’s Teknomeka model.
Of course variations in the design are encouraged but if an author of a design
wanted the design to be public you should be allowed to use it.
The flip side of this is that theoretically the medium mech category stands the
chance of being nothing but Gla frames. That will be fine. Judges will be
looking for a personality that stands out.
The curators of .mecha want as many people who wish to participate be able to do
so. Including those that may not normally build mecha or feel that building
mecha is “too hard.” This rule should allow anyone who wants to be able to
participate, to be able to do so.
