As threatened around 2 months ago in this post, I finally present my newest mech, the MAAP-210.

This is my attempt at building something in Mladen’s favoured style. It turned out a lot bigger than I originally intended. Eight legs also seriously strained my collection to the point where I had to resort to Bricklink to finish it off, but I’m rather pleased with the end result, even if it lacks Mladen’s refinement.

The hip joints gave me a few headaches. The original construction turned out to be far too weak (1 1x4 brick hinge gave it’s life for this information), so the centre four legs now feature wormgears operated by the knobs set into the side.

The nice thing about this is that they are now strong enough to hold the entire model up, and the front and rear legs can be lifted menacingly.

It also features the new designer click rotation hinges, although they may be a little hard to spot.

The chain-guns were a late addition, mainly to fulfill the Mladenist requirement for multiple weapons loadouts - missile launchers may follow later.

The MAAP-210 has a crew of four. In the front sits the driver. Behind him is the navigator, who also fires the top turret. In the rear are two more gunners, who work whatever weapons are mounted on the sides and share witty reparte like “I got him! I got him!” “Great kid - don’t get cocky.”

All comments and criticisms are welcome. I’d especially like to hear what you think, Mladen.

Cheers,

Allister

p.s. and yes, true to form, on a slippery surface it does fall over at a fly’s fart, hence the baseplate.

Allister this is the coolest mech I've seen in a while. You've really done a great job capturing the Mladen-esque multi-legged walker thing. All the details are good, but those legs really stand out. It would be cool to those legs impaling a tank, (...) (20 years ago, 27-Sep-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

(...) I like it... I like it alot. I think you deffinately captured some of the style of Mladen's mechs, but still made it your own. I have been thinking about making a multi-legged mech for awhile, but you guys keep raising the bar. The only thing (...) (20 years ago, 28-Sep-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

Nicely done Allister. You stay true to your word. I like that. :-) I think you did an excellent job overall. In fact, some of the things, like the Technic leg joints look like an improvement over my almost fanatical use of click-joints. I'm sad to (...) (20 years ago, 28-Sep-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

(...) I shudder in fear, I think it would take the combined firepower of every mech I've ever built to bring this monstrosity down. You've really accomplished a lot of the Mladen cues on the MAAP-210, like the studlessness, the tight color scheme, (...) (20 years ago, 29-Sep-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

(...) Nice work, Allister. I agree with Mladen about the "head" not being sleek enough, although after looking at the interior I guess it was more difficult to work around than it looks at first. Those legs still look grouse, even if they do render (...) (20 years ago, 29-Sep-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
  Re: Mobile Anti-Aircraft Platform MAAP-210

-snip- great post - excellent write up. Wow, the sheer amount of parts on this thing is staggering. Yikes. You used some excellent parts at the tips of the legs on the feet. That really is a choice part for the job of the toe spike. I think its (...) (20 years ago, 30-Sep-04, to lugnet.build.mecha)
  Re: Mobile Anti-Aircraft Platform MAAP-210

(...) A smack-free post. I'm honoured ;) "those legs... stand out" hur hur. Very punny. The legs you see weren't the original final design. I built one I though I was happy with and ordered 56 1x2 ladder brackets to make the rest of them. I only (...) (20 years ago, 1-Oct-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

(...) I liked the chain guns, if not a tad oversized, (if the body were to match those guns it'd work, but then wieght is always an issue isn't it?) I thought the big gun on the back might be better served if replaced with a head. Especially when I (...) (20 years ago, 4-Oct-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
