Hey All-

I have finally finished doing one of my dreams: building a lego gundam that looks good. Heck, I built two! May I present to you the RX-79 Desert Variant and the RGM-79 Sniper:

Sorry if the pic is a bit big, but I’m proud of them :<)

Build notes:

RX-79 Desert- Deeplink

I built the RX-79, the tan one, first. Right off the top, I constructed the legs. Quite simply, I wanted them to look right and work right. It took quite a bit of mickey mouse to make them move the way I wanted, but they are actually very simple and very strong, only click hinges and some 1x4 horizontal swing plate hinges in the hips.

Next was the torso. Although I have no pics of the cockpit for either model, there is a cockpit with a pilot in both of them; just nothing fancy. The RX-79 also has a Vulcan cannon and a multi-launcher built into the left torso, and a vent on the right.

Next came the arms. These were by far the hardest part of the Gundam; specifically, the shoulder joints. As I was strapped for 1x2 bricks with technic axle hole in the right color, I couldn’t doo ball shoulders, and several other standard designs would not work well either, considering I wanted armor ‘shoulder pads’, just like the real deal does. Eventually I had to compromise and use the 2x2x2 block hinges found on the Jango Fett Slave Ones’s laser turrets, and some click hinges. Although very moveable, they are weaker than I’d like, and don’t work with the arm straight out while holding a gun. But they do work.

The only other part of the arms I’m not real satisfied with are the lower arms and hands. Although functional, they are butt-ugly IMHO. The hands are hard to make good looking and yet strong, so I had to settle for the tried-and-true minifig pants for fingers.

The head was last. Another good bit of mickey mousing around; if you haven’t tried to build a Gundam head in this scale, you can’t comment on whether it is ugly ;<) I think it turned out ok.

The jetpack is very simple, but looks right and serves it’s purpose. It’s also a counterbalance for when the gundam stands straight up. Fully erect, the Gundam can stand but has a tendency to be rather tipsy. The jetpack helps correct this. While squatting, the Gundam is very stable, and looks cool to boot.

I built an almost-complete weapon set for the RX-79. It has a Machine Gun, Beam Rifle, Bazooka, twin beam sabers, and heavy shield.

RGM-79 Sniper- Deeplink

The RGM-79 was quite a bit easier, and is, IMHO, much better. It has basically the same legs, with one or two pieces changed, and different feet. The torso is quite a bit different, but still very simple, although aesthetically pleasing to me.

The arms are what really sets the RGM apart. It uses ball joint shoulders (I have lots of green 1x2 w/ technic axle hole) which are surprisingly stiff for ball joints...I must have nice ones or something. The arms are quite maneuverable, and work excellently with the Beam Sniper Rifle, which is quite unwieldy and heavy.

The head was extremely hard. The RGM has a very nicely rounded head, with a huge ‘eyes’ section. I finally got it too look at least recognizable, but it was pretty hard. I’m quite pleased that it turned out.

The jetpack is a VERY simple affair. The Snipers are supposed to sniper, not jump around like maniacs. But, it does look pretty cool and very ‘venty’.

The RGM-79 also has a nice weapons set, including the Beam Sniper Rifle, Light Beam Rifle, Pistol, Missile pod, and twin beam sabers.

It’s been one of my dreams to build an RGM-79 Sniper ever since I saw Gundam 08th MS Team on Toonami. I tried once a few years back, but the result was a total flop and me in tears. I’m quite a bit happier with the product this time.

Please let me know what you think! Any suggestions for the head and hands are ESPECIALLY welcome. Here’s some more Deeplinks to tide you over until the galleries are modded.

(URL) Perhaps the best "Bricky" Gundams I've seen. Very nice. -Lenny (20 years ago, 7-Jun-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

I really like these models. You really seem to get the most out of any of the parts you build with. Who needs curved wedges when you have 2x4 bricks :). The RX-79 has a pretty good form, and i am astonished as to how you managed to make a gundam (...) (20 years ago, 7-Jun-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

(...) I don't mind the big photo, Ryan. These things look like a lot of fun! I agree that you've gotten some good detail with some basic parts. I recommend adding one more axis of ankle articulation. (20 years ago, 8-Jun-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

Hey, cool! I really like how you did them without ot many slopes. It's hard to use blocks like that and make it look good, but you did it. However, they do look a bit blocky. Some slopes, especially in the leg areas, would make it look better I (...) (20 years ago, 10-Jun-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
