I’ve found the best method of stiffening ball joints is to insert a small piece of paper between the ball and the socket. Fit it snugly in the socket, then snap the ball in otherwise it tears. For extra stiffness use a double or even triple layer. Nail polish has been suggested, but that didn’t work to my satisfaction - it wasn’t noticeably stiffer, and it’s a permanent modofication.
