Anyway, I was reading through some of the other stories, and I wonder if you
can answer this question. This is more a question of the actual bible... why
is it that sometimes bible stories seem to have absolutley arbitrary points
thrown in?

I think that a lot of the old testament is probably collected from the notes of
the rabbis of various tribes. And those people probably acted like a combination
spiritual guide/general scribe of their tribes. So what we see is a combination
of their spiritual works and their general bookkeeping.
That said Im no biblical or rabbinical scholar...
