Hi, Scott.

Thanks!

but I have one question about your methodology. How do you photograph your action shots, like the one found here: http://www.thebricktestament.com/judges/samsonsfinalmassmurder/jg1630b.html

Fortunately the action shots have been few and far between because they do take a long time to set up. And they are generally very fragile, so just as I get everything into place, my wrist bumps into something and lots of stuff collapses, and I start over.

My previous big collapse-in-motion scene was, of course, the walls of Jericho coming down.

Do you use blocks behind the falling balcony pieces to hold them in place while you photograph it?

Yes, most of the stuff at weird angles is held in place (albeit flimsily) with LEGO supports hidden from the camera (behind the balcony or other debris) or off-camera. The one place where I used a questionably-non-LEGO solution was in my use of a bent paperclip inside the lefthand column to allow it to stay at that crazy mid-collapse angle. But before I am accused of blasphemy, did I mention that it was a LEGO paperclip? :)

A while back, Peer Kreuger suggested the use of wire to me, pointing out that there is “official LEGO wire” in certain LEGO elements. And Julie Krenz then pointed out that I could use the paperclips that come with the LEGO Desk Pal, so that’s what I ended up doing. It’s still a little cheesy, especially since I used photoshop to erase the little bit of the paperclip that the camera could see.

Finally where did you get your sky backdrop? Is it hand painted, or computer generated?

The main blue-sky-with-clouds background that I use for The Brick Testament is a couple of pieces of posterboard with the sky print on them. I found those at a drug store years ago. There have been only a few occasions where I’ve gone in and added more clouds in with photoshop. For outdoor night shots, I just use an all-black piece of posterboard, and then later I add stars using photoshop. And finally the cloudy sunrise / sunset background is a blow up of a photo my girlfriend took.

In general, I find it much easier to have the backgrounds in place when I take the photos rather than having to insert the backgrounds later on the computer.
