Hey Brendan, I’ve been meaning to ask you this. How often do you feel compelled to stop Bible-MOCing and build a spaceship or something? I have certainly had much less focus in my Tolkien project than you’ve had with your site, and part of that is that I’m constantly going off on tangents, like right now I’ve got a little Return of the Jedi Endor scene sitting in my apartment waiting to photograph, and I’ve got some Sea Monkeys sitting there waiting for me to build something for them.

By the way, I love your dewbacks in the Tatooine scene. Nice landscaping as well.

It’s only a mild and occasional frustration that all the LEGO building I do these days goes toward The Brick Testament. I haven’t really tired of building in the Ancient theme at all yet, and still greatly enjoy illustrating the Bible stories. But I do like other themes, as one might garner from my pre-Testament building days.

Building the city of Brikingham for the Brikwars game I hosted last year was a lot of fun. You just don’t get to do a cool monorail setup very often when illustrating the Bible. And the annual Ultimate LEGO Vehicle Contests have been another outlet for my “modern” building tendencies.

Even within The Brick Testament, I’ve done some modern buidling. I set the three “Instructions” stories from the Epistles of Paul in modern day, or close to it. I’m considering doing the same for The Law section of the Old Testament, but I’ll have to go over it again before deciding for sure.

In general, it’s been relatively easy for me to stay focussed on The Brick Testament just because of all the positive reactions I get from it. It’s very encouraging. And I always know there’s lots more good stories left to do, so my enthusiasm for it remain very high.

I do occasionally wish that I’d take some time away from working with LEGO in order to concentrate on other creative projects, like writing and recording a new batch of songs. And I maybe I will. Just after the next batch of Brick Testament stories, right? That’s what I keep telling myself.

(...) I agree that bias is inevitable. If I were to take on a similar project I'm sure others would say it was overly reverent, or Jewish readers might object to my Christological interpretation of certain texts in the Old Testament (of course, my (...)
