But anyway, one of the things that I noticed were the little
round 1x1 plates in it actually came in pairs - joined together
by little plastic blobs that you pull them off. I've never seen
that before for those bricks. Is it something that used to be
common, or just a feature of a couple of particular sets?

It is my belief that this formerly was common practice as the 1x1 round
plate was just about the smallest part TLG made other than flowers which
also came that way. I have seen this done in several older sets that I
was lucky enough to get new. I can't say which ones for sure, though. I
seem to recall it as more common on the transparent than non transparent
parts.

Note that when this was done, there was not an extra 1x1 round supplied,
as the combination of two plus a "sprue" (1) was of enough mass to not
require the "extra part" technique used now. (see past discussion on how
the bags are filled... it's a weight driven process)

Just the other day, I received an older (from 1992) set, which had some
of each.  The trans-red 1x1 rounds were on a sprue, but the grey 1x1
rounds were not, and there was an extra grey part.

(...) Extra grey but not trans red confirms my theory, I feel... The sprue increases the weight and obviates the need for a "spare".. Thanks, Steve! (25 years ago, 9-Feb-99, to lugnet.build)
