Thanks for the comments, Fredrik!
To get the curve of the treads right, I didn't really use any math
whatsoever. I had the real-life model on the desk in front of me, and I
knew how many chain links were needed to close the entire loop. I could
see the run of the treads on the model, and with some tweaking, I could
get the links in the LDraw version to match up pretty closely to te
actual model's. There was some amount of trial and error, as each of
the links is angled somewhere between 1 and 8 degrees ... my initial
attempt introduced too much sag between the return rollers, and the
first and last links didn't reach each other. Going back, I reduced te
sag and got the pieces to line up pretty well.
As for room inside - the tank holds the standard crew of 5 with no
problem. The driver and radioman/machine-gunner sit up front, the
main-gunner sits just to the left of the gun's breech, the loader stands
to the right, and the commander has a center area to stand, sit, or poke
his head out the hatch. There's some more information about the model
in one of the text files in the brickshelf directory.
Thanks again!
